Athletics is the number one Olympic sport and the cornerstone for all sports development. At each Olympics and Commonwealth Games, track and field consistently attracts the largest crowds and strongest television audience.
In 2009 Athletics in Western Australia embarked on a new exciting phase in its history with the opening of a new boutique style facility that has transformed the sport to a new generation of athletes. Membership of Athletics WA more than doubled in the past twelve months with membership numbers just under 1500.
The facility has also been the catalyst to Western Australia hosting its first National Championships since 1988 and the recent announcement that Athletics Australia have agreed to a long term deal with the Western Australian Government for Athletics WA to host both the Perth Track Classic and the Australian Junior Athletics Championships for the next four years.
Equally important is the recent agreement reached by the senior and junior bodies signalling a new commitment to working towards unifying the sport. The boards of Athletics WA and Little Athletics WA (LAWA) have formed the Community Athletics Council of Western Australia Inc. The aim of the Council is to foster harmonious relations between all affiliated athletics bodies in Western Australia and it should be noted that the four LAWA state run events at the stadium attract several thousand people on each occasion.
