Athletics WA will host a special 5,000m race in our season opening competition this weekend, and with Ray Boyd’s State Record sitting at 13:59.2, there’s more than just a first-place finish on the line.
To date, no West Australian athlete has run sub 14 minutes for a 5,000m track race on WA soil, and all eyes will be on local champions Matt Ramsden and Nic Harman as favourites to take the top honours.
Matt Ramsden, will be counting on the 1,500m speed that saw him win his heat at the 2018 Australian Athletics Championships & Commonwealth Games Selection Trials, before injury forced him to withdraw from the final.
The 21-year old currently holds State Under 20 records in the 1500m and 5000m and will surely have his sights on Herb Elliot’s State 1500m record in the near future. Hailed as ‘The Future’ by Usain Bolt when he was part of Bolt’s Allstar Team at the Nitro Athletics competition in 2016, he will be the one to bring some pace to this weekend’s race.
Nic Harman enters the race from the other end of the spectrum, being a half-marathon specialist and well-known in the WA running community for his outstanding performances on the road.
A brilliant run in the Australian Half Marathon on the Sunshine Coast in August, saw Nic return home with a bronze medal and a new WA State Record of 64.16. The performance earned him selection to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Half Marathon Championships in Wales, where he ran a big personal best of 63.46 to finish 12th in a world class field. Whilst the 5,000m is a big step away from the 22km he’s become accustom to, Nic will be one to watch when he calls on his endurance and economy.
Entries are open to all Athletics WA members over 16 years of age (join/renew here). Once registered, members can enter the 5,000m special event here.
Spectator entry to the WA Athletics Stadium is FREE, so come on down and witness what may be the fastest 5km by a West Australian on home soil!
