Author: waadmin/Monday, 12 November 2018/Categories: News, Featured

The first of the Douglas Memorial (DM) Shield Series was held in conjunction with Strive Program B on Friday night in an exciting night of athletics.

The DM Shield events for the night were the 400m, 1500m, Discus, Hammer Throw, Men’s High Jump and the 4x100m relay, with five clubs participating in the competition - Cockburn Athletics Club, Curtin Athletics Club, Perth Track and Field Club, UWA Athletics Club and West Track Athletics Club. Each club had the task of nominating one athlete to receive double points for the night as a 'Power Play'.

Curtin made a great choice in national finalist Courtney Heinze, who won the Men’s Discus convincingly with 51.13m, taking home the maximum points for his club.

In a hotly contested Men’s 400m, Cockburn’s Power Play nomination Luke Shaw produced a personal best to finish second (first athlete eligible for points) in 48.88 and earn the 50 points for his club.

The Women’s 1500m saw two Power Play athletes compete, with UWA’s Bernadette Williams showing great early season form and crossing the line in 4:26.65 to take the win. West Track’s junior star Ellaby Hansen ran close to her best and earned 30 points for her club.

Perth Track and Field Club nominated Bailey Reimers for the Power Play and were rewarded with double points in the Men’s High Jump as the highest placed eligible athlete.

The night was capped off with the 4x100m relays, where UWA took a convincing win in the women’s race with 47.96. In a thrilling finish, the Curtin team were the first across the line in the men’s race but were later disqualified for passing the baton outside the changeover zone, leaving the first placed points to UWA who narrowly edged out Perth Track and Field Club by just 0.02.

The final point scores after Series 1 are:
UWA Athletics Club                239
Curtin Athletics Club               173
Perth Track and Field Club     153
Cockburn Athletics Club          125
